Description
"Efesto & Selene" is an artistic composition of two wall-mounted light sources.
In a building from the mid-1930s on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, just a short walk from Mergellina in Naples, an original reinterpretation of the typical Neapolitan bourgeois house was undertaken. It had been the family home for generations, and one of the client's requests was to create a piece, as they say in Naples, to bring good luck.
The idea, in line with the layout of the house's renovation, was to create two overlapping artworks on the headboard of the master bedroom that would represent the two spouses.
The first artwork, "Efesto or Vulcan," represents the god of fire in Greek mythology, a figure of strength and genius.
The treated surface was crafted using cement plaster and an abstract textured imprint applied in a radial pattern. Iron pigments were subsequently oxidized through natural processes. The visual result evokes the summit crater of a volcano.
The second artwork, "Selene," the goddess of the moon in Greek mythology, belonged to a generation preceding the Olympian gods. Selene was often depicted as an enchanting woman driving a chariot through the night sky, carrying the moon with her. The Selene artwork, slightly overlapping Efesto, has a surface texture reminiscent of the lunar surface: craters, lunar seas, lunar valleys, ridges, and crevices. The pigments used for this artwork are gold and bronze powders.
The combination of textures imprinted on the material, fading into the imperfection and uniqueness of the handmade process, makes each artwork unique.
The natural light in the environment reflects on the surface pigments, creating surface light effects from the shimmer of the applied powder pigments.
Efesto & Selene are backlit with adjustable intensity lighting to emphasize the perimeters' silhouettes and create an intimate and welcoming ambient atmosphere.
